Josh is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Licensed Alcohol & Drug Counselor (LCADC), an EMDR Certified Therapist, and owner of Press Start Wellness & Recovery, LLC. He believes in the indomitable strength of the human spirit; that the dreams of all people never end. He pulls from almost two decades of Buddhist meditation experience along with his professional training to provide compassionate professional care. Drawing from his passion for nerd and geek culture, he deeply understands the importance of meaning, narrative, and creativity in the healing journey. Whether the same passions are shared or not, he genuinely desires to create space for you to share yours enthusiastically.
His own lived experience lets him know just how much a painful moment, a long period of upheaval, or people just not ‘getting’ how your brain or nervous system works can profoundly impair your relationships, sense of well-being, and identity. He is supportive of whatever identities and relationships empower and affirm you.
Josh has worked with diverse client populations throughout his extensive history of clinical practice and experience working in a variety of outpatient, inpatient, and in-home settings. Josh works well across the neurodiversity spectrum and respectfully seeks to be actively responsive to however you best understand and interpret the world.
As an EMDR therapist, he provides healing while also drawing heavily from ‘parts’ work and internal family systems (IFS). Coming from a Mindfulness and Buddhist Psychology background with years of personal practice, he remains person-centered and trauma-informed in his work with the people he serves. Josh also utilizes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) skills, and Self-Compassion in his approach to therapeutic work. Josh also draws from neuroscience to provide the skills, care, education, and resources to help people learn to soothe their nervous system and connect with their values. The foundation of his practice includes an emphasis on the healing power of connection, non-judgment, affirmation, and empowerment.
Josh graduated from Rutgers University with an undergraduate degree in Psychology and Philosophy and a graduate degree in Clinical Social Work. Additionally, he earned a certificate in addiction counseling after completing the Rutgers Addiction Certificate Training (ACT) program at the Rutgers Graduate School of Social Work. Josh has since gone on to get advanced clinical licensure (LCSW, LCADC). He is EMDR certified and a qualified clinical supervisor. He provides supervision and support to peer workers in the behavioral health field. He has begun teaching classes for continuing education and loves to incorporate his own special interests into the material and design. His greatest professional achievement is the training that 10 years of being a barista in full-time food service provided him. Some of his special interests are anime/manga, video-games, litRPG, role-playing, comics, Buddhism, and neurobiology.
